MeteorRats Scramble! Rocks likely on the ground!

“I’m not going to say absolutely it didn’t produce meteorites on the ground, but I have not seen a Doppler signature that would suggest that,” Cooke said Friday night from the Marshall Space Flight Center near Huntsville, Alabama.

This animation shows the orbit of the fireball that occurred over New Hampshire/Maine around 12:50 AM EDT on May 17 (night of May 16). Once the meteoroid gets very close to Earth, the view shifts to the fireball's perspective, depicting what a camera attached to the meteor would show as it plunges towards Earth.

The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum suspects the meteor crashed into the woods of northwestern Maine, based on preliminary findings. It's offering a $20,000 reward if someone recovers a piece of the meteorite weighing at least 2.2 pounds.
